Never had to work on toilet blocks, but just wondered how they work...not the motion sensor ones. I think I read that it works when the taps are activated. How do they work, also what is in the cistern?

Its a siphon that when the water level gets high enough it dumps the water. and its usually a cistermiser ( as erm said) that lets the water into the cistern. unless its just trickle fed..

I thought they were set up on timer so they didn't keep flushing all night, as whyme says an ordinary urinal just trickle fills then when the cistern is full it syphons down and flushes, you can set the rate of flush by closing down the pep valve but once set it flushes at that rate 24/7, thought the cisternmiser turned it off out of hrs

Trickle fill no longer permitted.

Cistermisers work on a pressure differential of the upstream/downstream pipework. Will only open when the pressure behind the valve drops, when say a toilet is flushed or a tap opened. Bit crap really. You need one cistermiser per cistern and if the pipework isn't 100% they can cause problems.

The IR sensor ones are much better.

like erm and tb said the pressure drop starts a timer that can be altered. if no taps are run or toilet flushed it aint filling or flushing.

The old ones work with a spring loaded diaphram set against a bouyant weight in a chamber that fills through a pin hole sized aperture adjustable via the red lever.
The pressure drops downstream. The chamber emptys
The weight drops against the spring loaded diaphragm.
Clears the path for the water to flow through a gause filter.
Meanwhile the pinhole is filling the chamber which lifts the bouyant weight which closes the diaphragm.
Water pressure effects performance.
As does silt and gunk blocking the internals.

Even an IR wont make kids wash hands lol.
Just clear the urinal as they are wiping snots on their mates backs on the way out the door 🙂
