Hi Has anyone ever fitted one of these ? Best place for me to fit it would be straight after the stoptap where it enters the property under the stairs. The only concern i have with this is it is a 22mm main and it feeds up to an unvented cylinder. The instructions state that you can reduce down to 15 mm and back to 22mm to fit the combimate without any problems. whats your views on this.
cheers Donny

Hi. A short length reduction in bore wont have a noticeable affect. The frictional resistance over such a short length does not normally reduce flow, however i am not familiar with this particular item. There may be reasons it ignores the norm?

A water softener would be better on an unvented cylinder but a combimate will do. They only comes in 15mm so you will have to reduce down then back up, this isn't a problem, I have a few of these on my patch and most of them are done like this

These are ok until the 'balls' start to break down.

We've been out to numerous where the balls have sent fragments up the cold main to block the heat exchangers in combis, the y strainers on cylinders and the nrv/prv on unventeds.

The balls agitate, and break down irregularly, thus causing fragmentation.

This is only our experience of them however. Wouldnt fit one in my worst enemies.

Beware softeners, especially salt based unless you check compatibility with the softening agent and your appliances.

Think anode/cathode/electrolyte and you're somewhere there.

cheers.

I often wondered why they where so keen on Power flushes and the like.

The problem is trying to filter the water in the system so it doesn't block the narrow passages in the plate heat exchanger or get caught up in the diverter valve.

Plate exchangers are a good idea, but if you look at one you can see why the water in the system needs to be filtered of any debris.

That's it bernie, a large part of the inefficiency of water heating with a combi is down to the fact that within a week of installing onto an existing system, the plate heat exch is unhappy.

And how many people bother to flush/drain/fill/drain/fill/treat??? Scary.

One of our installation companies use the magnacleans with dazzling success. They flush, then put a magnaclean on, so any particulates are caught in that before hitting the heat ex.
