Hi all. May be of interest to anyone looking to get a new van on contract hire. There are some pretty competitive deals out there at the moment. I'm going with a 4 yr contract hire at £263 + VAT a month (3 + 47) for a MWB VW Crafter.

Works out at £3,287.50/year which I think is pretty good really. That includes road tax too so really it's £3,087.50/year.

I'm going to go with it and thought others might like to know about the deal too.

8k a year Ray. Probably too little for you guys I would guess but perfect for me as all my work is very local.

The company in question was a clear £50 a month cheaper than all the others I could find though. They are a small family run business.

From what I can see it makes no sense in buying from the manufacturer directly..

A couple of things that I learned the hard way.

1) Keep the service history, and a copy of it. If you don't have every single service record at the end of the contract, they will crucify you
2) Ditto any removable parts like the jack. You wouldnt believe how expensive those cheap jacks are if they are missing at the end
3) At the end of the contract less 6 weeks, ask them to come and do the inspection. If there is any bodywork damage (which they will nail you for) at least you have 6 weeks to price up getting it done locally, and not at their extortionate rates. We normally budget £1200 per vehicle for hand-back repairs. Mind you, ours are doing 25k - 60k per year, so at end of contract they are often over 100k and our drivers probably aren't as careful as you will be.

Thanks for the potentially significant cost saving advice Ray! We are going to be getting the van wrapped. I wasn't sure about doing this, but it seems to me to be very cost effective as it should keep the paintwork in pristine condition. At the end of the 4 years we just peel it off with a heat gun.

Had pricing of £2k + VAT to fully wrap the van. I think given what you've said re repair prices at the end of the period it is definitely worth going with.

Can't help with that one. We don't signwrite most of our vehicles, although we have some magnetic signs on a couple of them.

Hmm I new someone was going to ask that soon. I am going to have to swap computers to go and get the details. 2 secs!

Thats a good excess mileage rate. I wouldn't worry about going over at 6p per mile, but check the small print - sometimes there is a punitive rate if you go over by more than a certain %

Will do Ray, I will read it all as soon as the small print arrives. I'm a stickler for it! There is next to no chance of me going over though tbh. The current van has been kept by us for 4 years now (can't believe how fast time goes) and we've done 22k in that time.
