Copper pipe leak under sink

Hi everyone

Your help and expertise is very much appreciated, here's a picture to help.
It's under my kitchen sink and the Copper pipes are coming from the kitchen tap. The leak is circled in red and it's coming from a pipe that doesn't look like it's in use anymore as the water seems to be diverted just above the shelf? It's just a drip but it fills up a pint cup over 6 hours, i don't want to mess around too much so i've just checked the red valve which is on as tight as it can be, is there anything i can do myself to stop the leak or do i need to call someone?

Well if you go to a plumbers merchants tomorrow and ask for a washing machine valve cap with rubber inner washer they will give you a cap that just screws onto the red leaking valve,screw up tight and you should be ok

Alternatively if you have a pipe cutter and a push fit stop end, cut the pipe and put the stop end on it.

Wet change is much more exciting!!

I did that once on an outside tap fed by MDPE pipe from our bore hole. Water came out quite well and I had it under control then it went wooosh. Pointed pipe and jet of water went half way across field. Got a little wet fitting that new tap.

We had to change a stopcock in a stable block recently, no one had a clue where the supply might be or how/if it could be shut off, in the end it was easier to do it live rather than spend hours searching the farmyard. Wouldn't want to do it under that sink though.

3/4 female cap end required as stated above. easy to put on, ask for a rubber washer inside, that way you could probably do it with no tools, screw it in hand tight!

Hi all

Thanks for your replies. I went for the valve option and was recommended to use a seal thread because the valve didn't come with a washer. So i wrapped the tape around the end about 4 times (as advised by the chap in the store) and then fitted the cap and tightened with a wrench.
There is stil a very slight leak, that has reduced over the last 2 days, now it's only dripping a tiny amount, about a quarter cup over 2 days.
Will it eventually stop, or should i try wrapping more thread around the pipe and get someone stronger than me to tighten the cap???

Try again with more tape. More tightening might create a leak somewhere else.

go and buy a 15mm compresion cap remove the nut and ring from the cap as your going to reuse the nut and ring thats on the valve turn of the water undo the valve fit cap onto existing nut tighten job done

this is best as its possible the leak is from the spimdle of the valve

your 3/4 brass cap should do. put in a 3/4 tap washer into it befor screwing on. im asked to blank these off everyday when i work in empty housing association flats.
