core drill

might seem like a obvious question but i wondered what the difference between a sds drill and a core drill is, im aware the voltage input is different but apart from this what's the difference, i.e. rpm, clutch, heat, could i use a core drill bit with a sds drill ? im not about to as i have no need im just curious.

I use my old Bosch sds for core drilling now , as I had my core drill nicked , it works a treat , I did once snap a sds bit in side the sds chuck , but all ok now ..

voltage does not matter as you get both types of drill in 230v and 110v dependant of where you want to use it.

the main difference is an sds drill is designed to run at a certain rpm and torque to allow the sds drill bits to work correctly.

the core drill will have a stronger motor, different rpm, different clutch point etc... that is more suitable for the needs of the core drill bits.

many sds drills can cope with small sized core drilling without 2 much problems (upto 80mm on average) but if you want to drill flue holes, extract holes etc.. then a core drill is the best option as this size would wear out an sds drill rapidily.

if you use very good quality bits (sds,core) then the life of any drill will be alot longer, poor bits can make a good drill struggle.

There are 2 types of core bit - diamond core and precussion core. The diamond core basically works by slowly grinding away at the material to be cut. The percussion core has little chisel tips along the edge which are hammered into the material,
