Manchester Area

Hi, I am 24 and almost finished my City & Guilds domestic plumbing course. I have a one week block to go (water regs) then I'm done.

I am looking to gain employment preferebly fulltime, or if you do not have any positions available, then even I would be be willing to work weekends for free in assisting in general plumbing work. I have really tried to gain employment via the usual steps, but no one is really recruiting at present. I am not looking to just get experience and then go off and work for somebody else.

I live in South Manchester, and am willing to travel 15 miles from the airport region. I am very hardworking, reliable, consistant and have a great eye for detail.

I don't have my own tools at present, but I am currently looking to make a bulk purchase just after xmas. I also have a full clean licence, held for 5 years.

In terms of experience, other than what I have completed on the course, I have only ever fitted an outside tap, and fixed a leaky shower waste pipe. Unfortunatly it appears that friends/family do not need plumbing work at present.

If there is anything anyone could offer me in terms of possible work or even just advice, then I would be very grateful indeed.

really gets me to see posts like this
youngster struggling and desperate just to get some work meanwhile we let half the world come here and work while people who have lived all their life are struggling
good luck mate and hope it works out for you

I was in your position 6 months ago. Keep trying and trying and you should get a nibble eventually. Don't worry too much about tools to begin with, you're unlikely to be set loose on anything demanding to begin with and whoever gives you a shot will have more than enough tools for you to use. Go to plumbing merchants and ask to leave your details and ask some guys direct if they're about. Make it clear you're looking for unpaid or tokenly renumerated fetch, carry and bits of help kind of work. Just trying to get some experience. There are guys out there who are busy and don't fancy paying for help but could do with an extra pair of hands. Trick is to work hard to find them. But do not give up even if it takes you 6 months too. Then, you'll become of more and more use and eventually they'll chuck you some pennies. But by then you'll hopefully be learning enough that you'll consider it worth your time. Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice & comments... I am struggling, mainly because I am so desperate to work. I work in admin at present, and just can't put in 100% everyday, becuase I am too busy thinking of where else I can apply... I'll let you all know as soon as something crops up...Cheers once again...
