Ferroli Modena 80e problem.

Hi, I have a ferroli modena 80e which has started to play up. It was not igniting with the hot water or central heating so called in a plumber. He serviced the bolier and couldnt find anything wrong with it. It springs into action when the front casing is off or hanging down which is strange so he recommended a new pcb. When he tested the fan, the venturi crumbled(which seems quite common) which we also replaced. So now we have a new pcb and venturi and still have the same problem. The boiler either works for a while then shows the lock down light or the green led light comes on but has not ignited. Plumber now avoiding us and cant get anyone else out. Can anyone help. Fan seems ok, air pressure switch too.

If the boiler works when the casing is off then you have a pressure problem. Possible APS probelm although you could have a blockage in the fan/venturi's

classic knackerd aps if the venturies have been replaced,sadly you did not need a pcb

Hi, thanks to both of you for your quick answers, why are you so confident its the aps and not the thermistors like people have had recommended in their questions? Is this a common fault with ferroli boilers do you know?

Its a common fault really. Where I used to work we used to kepp Ferroli APS on our vans as we looked after a few of them and it was a very common fault. Shame you had to waste money on a PCB.

because it works with the combustion door off not a thermistor issue

before you buy anything else for the boiler check for resistance at the fan terminals you should be looking for about 70 kohms if you are only getting say under 50 the fan is faulty also check if there is a restrictor fitted just above where the fan sits if your flue length is under 1 metre it should be a 45mm flue restrictor if the flue length is greater then you can remove the restrictor

its not the fan or restrictor,or at least highly unlikely IMHO the op has had venturies replaced(the biggest cause of this fault) it is very likely the aps is the culprit

Your right, might finally get a plumber if they only have to fit a new APs.

It will most likely be the aps, but still could be the fan so would definitely do the check rm1 suggested to eliminate it. Unfortunatley sounds like the guy you had change the pcb didnt know what he was doing so wouldnt call him back anyway, also only gas registered engineers should be working on the appliance.

Hi, had the fan checked its fine, changed the air pressure switch and still the problem persists. Have noticed a pattern to boiler shutting down, it ignites when the hot water is running just by itself and central heating is not on. The problem happens when the central heating is on and then the hot water is switched on. Either it doesnt ignite immediately or the hot water does ignite then when i switch off hot water it goes into standby and then when the central heating should come back on it shuts down the boiler(red light)

There is two models of the 80 e with the same GC No. one has a separate ignition board and one has just one board but the rest of the boiler is the same

which do you have ?

How do you know the resistance rating for the fan? Is that a general rating or specific for this boiler? Genuinely want to know.

Oh and when I had this problem on a 102, it was the venturi. However the manufacturers tech line insisted it was a blocked heat exchanger....I listened to Gas Man and he sorted it. So do ensure the venturi got done.

Hi, we have two boards mfo2 and an ignition board. The venturi in the fan has defo been changed because I went to get it and seen the plumber change it. Gas man, you say venturies, is there two?

yes there is and if he has only changed one theres your problem there should be a red one and white one

The one i went to get was a brown one so assuming it was the white one he hasnt changed, can you tell me what that is called please, and if its easy to get. I really appreciate your help and wish you worked in Scotland!

can you show me the link most modenas are red and white
