My customer reports that often there is a strong "fishy smell" in the upstairs area of the house particularly in 1 bedroom (I know!). There is no water piped to the room other than a radiator and the room is about 15ft from the nearest bathroom. The smell is only apparent in the evenings and mainly but not always after the bath or shower has been used. It can last for a short time or hours. I am sure it must be something to do with the waste pipework but would welcome any comments - sensible ones!

my guess is if he has a little snifter of his ceiling rose/bulb holder then this is where the smell comes from when they get old and burnt they start to smell like a kipper

It is most likely electrical isulation breaking down. As said, check light fitting and also sockets/switches. Remove all plugged in appliances and see if the smell stops. You could also isolate the upstairs lights then the ring main and see if smell persists.

Is the shower electric? Check it out and do a proper insulation test or get an electrician. Also you can go on the Mira shower site and see their instructions for fitting electric showers, it gives you lengths, voltage drops and cable gauge for load.

Sometimes people have installed a replacement shower on old cable or cable too small for the new shower.

The shower supply cable may be worn, it may be overloaded.
It could as somebody else said, simply be the ceiling rose or the lamp holder or its flex, or even the light switch.

To say it was the waste pipe would require a lot more detail of its run. An old trick was to go to the local chemist and buy some eucalyptus oil and let that go down the shower waste first then if you can't smell it in the bathroom down the WC. It may just help you decide which it is.

Leaky radiator valve .The inhibitor stinks like fish and when the heating is switched on it pushes a gassy fishy smell out.
