Hi all,

Newbie here with a little plumbing experience, what i am trying to do is replace and old corroded and leaking rad with a new one and at the same time drain the system down and cleanse and put in some inhibitor.
I have a boiler with a hot water storage in the loft (vented system ? )

Any guides would be helpful or tips to assist me but this is how i feel the process should go:

-turn off mains gas, water and electricity to the property
- open all TRV's
-prop up ball valve on storage tank in loft to stop it refilling once i open the lock sheild drain off
- attach hose to lock sheild drain off near door
- drain heating down
- change defective rad
-close lock shield drain off
- pour cleanser down pipework
- tighten the new rad
- remove timber from top of storage tank (holding ball valve in place)
- turn back on all mains supplies
- this is the part i am unsure of, will the system start to re-fill on its own or will i need to locate a filling loop ?
- and finally after a few days repeat the process but add in inhibitaor at the end

If anyone thinks ive missed anything or can add any tips it would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi all,

Think you have missed two years at college 🙁

but to give some food for thought to start with

if you do this
-turn off mains gas, water and electricity to the property

why would you do this ?

-prop up ball valve on storage tank in loft to stop it refilling once i open the lock sheild drain off

And why are you turning the gas and electric off to the property ?

Sorry but your reply is both confusing , I will try to answer what I can gather from your post. I will the proping the arm that conects to the ball valve to stop the tank re-filling once I begin draining the system down.

If you have a vented system there with be a gate valve on /close to the F&E, just isolate the supply to your HW by using this and drain the CH system . This way you wont have to cut of the mains water and can still drink tea while you sort it.

If you keeping the existing valves on the rad and it is a straight swap just turn off TRV close lockshield and away you go

If your unsure maybe get someone round as this is a quick and easy job

Thanks for the replies, i've never drained an open vented system before hence question regarding turning water elec and gas off.
I want to drain the C/H down fully to introduce some cleanser and inhibitor to stop any more corrosion to the rads.
I will update you with either my sucess or fail ! 🙂
