im wanting to do the wiring for it. I've read the manufacture instructions and it says it requires 13 amp fuse double pole switch and for extra protection an rcd.
so I'm going to buy a 13amp rcd protector 13 amp switch. with 2.5 cable. can i spur it of to a washing machine fuse switch?
its for my friend who owns his own car work garage and wants a hot water to wash use. i don't want to just plumb it in and then say you will need a electrician as it will take 20mins for the cold feed connection plus id like to learn how to for future reference.

why are you doing rcd, other than extra protection no need really

stnd double pole fused connection unit would be fine

and depending on length 1.5mm would be more than good enough

No you can't spur off a spur.

A 3kw heater should have its own dedicated feed from the board, same an an immersion heater.

Hi how would you recommend it tamz? I know the 3kw requires a 13 amp double poke switch and extra protection with a rcd.
Could you please tell me how you would wire it?

It is a hyco 3 kW water heater. It requires a 13 amp double pole switch.
How will I ever learn and if I get guided by yourselfs it will be just as good as a sparky.

Because the load could be constant,
A 3kw heater needs a dedicated feed from the board.
This should be connected through an RCD.
The 13 amp dp switch is not a spur switch.
You should leave it to a spark or work alongside one.

We all had to learn but not by diving in head 1st.

I'm almost 100% sure that as Tamz says, a water heater has to have a dedicated supply from the distribution board, and you definitely cannot spur off a spur.

You can spur off a ring main, within limits (ie, there's a limit on how many spurs you can take off a ring). I'd suggest that the RCD protection is recommended because it's a water heater and as such there's potential for injury and death.

I have to say I agree with the bulk of the comments here. Leave this one to a friendly spark who will let you help and learn. Pick his brains, ask questions.

There are jobs where you can wing it and learn on the job. An appliance that mixes water and electricity is not one of them!
