I have been quoted by a Gas Safe MET1 engineer to move my gas meter to a external flush box on the opposite side of the wall.
He intends to connect the main ECV to 22mm copper pipe through the cavity (in a plastic shield), through the rear of the 'new' gas box and to a secondary ECV, anaconda and to the meter.
Sounds like a neat solution, but I have read on the internet that gas service inlet feeds should only enter the box via the cutout at the front of the box, and there is no mention of being able to enter the box from the rear - even if sealed.

I know that he should be the expert, but does this sound OK??

Sounds very dodged to me

Just because they have met1 does not mean they can move a meter. It has to be authorised by the gas transporter.

Phone your supplier and get a quote off them

I checked with OFGEM, and they say that it can be moved provided any alterations are made AFTER the ECV and it is commissioned afterwards by a Ofgem Approved Meter Installer.
Just not sure about the inlet pipe entering the gas box from the rear though.
The quote from the Meter Asset Manager was 4 times as expensive!

Don't ask for my opinion if your going to disregard it.

I'm a trained gas engineer and when a meter needs moving it has to be authorised by the gas transporter. Otherwise it's illegal. I have lots of gas quals. But if I'm not authorised to do them or working within my limits it's illegal.

You'd might as well ask bob from down the pub to move it.

Photo-0009.jpgyou mean like zees?. see loads of them.
nothing stopping going to side of cabinet then in..

Relocating a meter or repositioning it using different fittings is classed as Catagory 3 work and can only be done by an OAMI or their agents working on their behalf.
MET 1 only allows you to relocate the meter if you are working for or on the orders of an OAMI with the express permission of the MAM.

I suggest you ring OFGEM again, give then the full story and see what they say.

I read it as.
Ecv inside
Pipe service to outside thru cavity.
Fit meter
Pipe back thru cavity to dwelling
No Simon.
- Primary ECV inside
- Service pipe through wall into box
- Secondary ECV and meter (with notice indicating where main ECV is situated)
- Pipe back thru cavity to dwelling

REDSAW - Do you mean bring the supply pipe out in a suitable liner below the box and elbow it up and into the standard entry hole in the box - bottom left?
