In order to build up the required on site experience to become qualified I plan on writing to several gas engineers a bit outside my locality so I won't be in direct competition with them once I qualify. At best I would expect minimum payment to work for them, at worst nothing. Has anyone tried this approach? What are my chances of being taken on? I have 3 years "wet" plumbing experience.

tbh you have 2 hopes bob hope and no hope unless you get someone who is snowed under and wants some free labour i mailed 35 engineers
33 didnt reply and 2 said no thanks this is the biggest single problem for people doing their acs
i would abandon any hope of being paid any money as even offering free labour i still couldnt find one and am now lucky enough to have got in with a housing association
sorry to be blunt but its going to be tough and ime just preparing you
noone in your area will want another competitor and few want to slow down long enough to teach you end answer questions while you write up you portfolio notes
