normally if you have inch[28mm]cercs[pipes] going to the cylinder the vent will come off the flow[top pipe] and the cold feed into the return bottom pipe,if its fully pumped the vent and cold feed will go into the pipework before the pump and you will have 1 motorised 3 port valve[y plan] or 2 motorised valves [s plan]
 
Reason for asking is boiler has never given hot water into the tank and I can't find any motorised valve!!! system is over 30 years old but heat the rads really well.
