Managed to change a prv today with out removing hydro block or taking boiler off the wall! was bloody awkward though luckily my hands are pretty small.

how do most people do these? im yet to decide on best method

I've done them like that a few times, sometimes can do it sometimes can't. Just find depends on the pipework, have cut the cold in out of the way before now too.
 
Replace with better Boiler. Tired of scraping my buckles in bloody worcesters (bloody because of the layers of other engineers blood that its taken in its life time) last one I did had to change the exp vessel too so lifted whole lot off bracket and changed it from behind. Fortunately flue was gun foamed so came out clean.
