Grey stop tap on water pipe

Have just moved in to a new home and the only pipe available for the washing machine has a grey stop tap. Have tried using once but seems to be hit water. Is this right? The only other pipe near has a black stop tap?

Did you mean HOT water not "hit water"
Most W/M are now cold fill only, do you have one or two hoses on the back of the machine ??

Hi, all sorted now. The hot water pipe had a blue/grey stop cap on it which confused me. Have found the cold water pipe and reconnected. Thanks anyway.
