I had a kitchen gully that routinely used to accumulate stuff from the washing machine powder without having a fault. Similarly, a customer's (on the same estate) would fill with hair from a bath waste. The gullies were deep and designed to accumulate sediment to protect the drain itself (I think). There were no (obvious) faults with either. If a drain smells there's usually something wrong with it.
Yes, it did smell, but was most noticeable when it was being cleaned. Probably the combination of kitchen sink wastewater was the cause of the smell, rather than the washing machine wastewater alone.Did it smell when the gulley was full of washing machine gunk?
