Header tank filling noise

I have just replaced a faulty header tank ball valve and now have a loud whistling noise through the cold water supply pipe, as the valve starts to close.

How can i stop the noise?

Tried reducing flow on stopcock. It has reduced noise slightly but now seems to go on for longer.

Has it got a silencer on? No its not a joke! Many ballcocks have them on. It depends which ball valve you have fitted, compare it to the one you took off. The noise is probably the speed of the water through a restriction, it may be inherent in the ball valves design. Is it a BS 1212?

The valve looks identical to the one i took off, although the narrow end of the inner cone, is slightly flatter. It is a 'screwix' part 2 bs1212.

Hmm!

One would imagine an identical ball valve would make the same sort of noise. I know you can get all kinds of different noise coming off ball valves with all kinds of causes and remedies. But replacing like for like shouldn't cause it to make more noise. Unless perhaps its a cheaply made one, whose design makes it noisy.

I can't really say much more than that, and would as been suggested try reducing the flow. An equilibrium valve may work, or a Torbeck (?) or even a BS 1212 Part 3 (same as part 2 but plastic) but that is more money spent and may not help.
Some places advertise Silent valves try and look for where they sell them.

The whistle is usually caused by the fast flow of water through the ball valve's orifice or body. So what has changed to make a direct replacement noisy?

Neighbour has given me a spare cone to try, which is a slightly different shape. This has reduced the noise a little and also changed the type of sound.

I'm sure you are right, that the noise is caused by the fast water flow through the valve and every valve seems to be different.

I changed the original valve as the cone end was damaged and not shutting off, so maybe this is why it was quieter.

I will look at your suggested alternatives and if the noise becomes unbareable, will try one of these replacements.
