Bob Hill

Hi all, i'm not trained a a plumber but am hoping to become trained in the near future. Reading around on the forum it seems like people think it might not be the best idea at the moment?

I've joined to do some research into qualifications and types fo training. My absolute ideal would be to find someone to take me on as an apprentice - But i think that's probably almost impossible.

Cheers,
Bob

welcome to the house of fun bob

might be an idea to let us know where your from

Welcome along mate! What kind of course u thinking of doing ?

Well, I've been somewhat warned off these intensive 6-8 week courses due to the middeling to bad reviews i've read and the fact that you only get the technical certificate and not the NVQ (think i've understood that right...). I'm looking at these two: Plumbing City and Guilds Foundation Diploma Level 1 (Sept ’11) | Plumbing courses in Brighton
Plumbing City and Guilds Intermediate Diploma Level 2 (Sept ’11) | Plumbing courses in Brighton

But it seems neither of these might get me the on the job assesment. I guess i'd try to get work experience etc whilst doing the course....

It basically seems the key is to get some work (with someone qualified) before or as you train. It seems easy enough (should you have money) to get the technical cert, but getting work assesed on site is the issue.

So... that's kind of the plan, though my research is making me think it just might not be wise to give it a go.

im not sure what those are exactly, the level 2 looks like the tech cert but cannot be , i guess theve just changed the title and not altered the wording yet
the level 1? dont know that either, suspect its really the building services level 1, ive posted a thread on it under plumbing courses, may have to search it

Thanks for the helpful replies. I agree the wording is rather confusing for those courses. Can anyone recommend a good place to look for courses in the South east? all I can come up with looking on Google is colleges and fast track courses.

if your a school leaver the choice is a building services course full time or an apprenticeship. forget applying for an apprenticeship at college as all they will tell you is "have you got a job?" when you say no they will say no apprenticeship then.

Thanks for the advise.
I'm actually a wee bit older (24).

I'm looking around (not hopefully) for someone who might want an apprentice.

You mention building services courses. Are these a specific type of course? or are you refering to the 6129 and 6089 ones?
