Welcome to the forum. Can you really become gas safe registered within 1 year from starting? I find that terrifying!

I don't see a problem with getting registered within a year.
The knowledge though, takes a lifetime.

Did you do the speedy route mm? I'm not knocking it if you did. I just find it amazing that you can take in enough info In that time to be deemed competent.

I have had a few apprentices over the years my last one I have had for six years and to be honest one of the best I have had I have only just set him up with a van and sent him out on his own.
i know that he will call me when he needs to if he did not I would be worried. but I personally would not have been confident in him after a year I know big company's fast track workers came across one last week installed gate valve on a vent pipe.but I do think in are careers we need some one to call on when needed I still have some one I call not as often now .and I still have calls from my old apprentices but it does get less. you can not teach them everything in four years when we all learn every day,so if you are on your own after a year you may possibly need some support and you will get a certain amount from here but also I would advise you keep a close relationship with the person that has trained you in that year.

No my friend, I did a four year apprenticeship with BG before it became BG.
I've so far completed 40 odd years in this profession and while I know quite a bit, there is always more to learn.
Competent is a basic skill.
Capable of doing the job is another matter.

it seems to me that being a gas technician and being a plumber are 2 different things. No gas engineer knows the rules on vents etc and non gsr plumbers dont know how to do a tightness test. But to be a successful self employed heating engineer you need both trades to succeed. so becoming a gas tech in a year is possible, being able to work on all the systems out there takes a bit more learning and erxperience and we all continue to learn on a daily basis, and despite my cynical apperance, this old forums is very useful at times to me as well. so keep on learning Noah and u can turn into an old git soon.🙂

That's a shame mate. It's really useful on here. You said your bit and people said there's. It's a public forum and everybody has an opinion. If the views expressed on here have upset you then maybe plumbing/gas isn't the right career for you as I don't believe they were aimed directly at you. It's just more experienced people expressing their opinions.
