Got a boiler change to do next week and the bloke is having a new kitchen at the same time. The gas supply to the boiler and hob is currently chased into the wall and will need to be altered. As the supply enters the kitchen from outside it makes sense to keep all the pipework outside too, and just pipe through the wall directly to the appliances.
Now, my question, is there anything that says i cant put the isolation to the hob outside just before the supply enters the building. It would be in the guys back yard so no miscreant can mess with it.

Is it completely impractical to fit it bellow the hob somewhere? The isolation valve should be as close as practical to the appliance it services. Fitting outside is no use- if you were working on the appliance you would have no control over the security of the isolation. Anyone could turn the supply back on when you are working on the hob. Does not matter it is in his yard.

why not fit it standard under the hob ,there is always enough room there , I have not personally seen one outside ever and I would not put one there to be honest !I dont know if they are design for out side weather

Cant put it below the hob coz there an oven going there. Suppose i could always stick it behind the plinth as he aint too happy about having a hole cut in his nice new cuboard next to the hob.

theres always an oven under the hob, and the isolator does fit above and behind the oven.

As above. The oven is or should be easily removable if access to the hob isolator is required.
Cutting a small access hole at back of a unit is most practical option though.

Did'nt say it was unusual to find an oven under ALL gas hobs. Would it not make more sense to have the isolation where it could be accessed without the need to remove the oven first?
Just my way of thinking.

just think of how many home owners have the knowledge how and where from to turn the gas of from the ECV,gas valve under boiler, re stricter elbow in front of gas fire ! this valves are there in front of customer but still they do not know what to do with it ! is the next gas engineer after you who will be looking for the gas valve ,and i usually look for it behind the oven ,and would not even thing there could be one out side till this morning ,have come across ones sitting on the side but there is usually piles of kitchen pans and so on

Fair point, it makes sense if everyone put the valve in the same place then everyone would know where to look for it as you say. My point here is that the rules say "as close as practical" to the appliance and having to remove the oven to gain access does'nt seem very practical to me. Thinking about it though i suppose if the hob ever became ID and the valve was turned off and supply capped behind the oven theres less chance of some nugget trying to reconnect it.

the service valve is intended for our use only not the customers, if we have to remove oven then so be it. if the valve wasnt within few 100mm of hob i would assume there wasn't one fitted imho

i would never do this, (again i know it is victor meldrew head again), but say someone isolates outside while the appliance is on the turns it back on again you will have unburnt gas entering the property, not very likely is it, BUT it is possible and if it happened you would be asked "do you think it is a good idea now?"

if it can be fitted in cub next to oven/hob space then thats ideal, if not behind the oven is the next best option.

Looks like its getting fitted behind the oven then, thanks for all the info lads, i'm not young enough to know everything (Oscar Wilde, i think)

i went to a kitchen fire to check a hob that had combusted. the kitchen fitters had put the gas tap behind the oven. The fire investigator blokey said that they should never be fitted behind oven and should be in the cupboard next to it. TBH i cant really see his reasoning behind it i suppose its down to personal preference as long as its there. wherever possible i put them in the cupboard next to the oven housing

His job is to investigate the cause of a fire, not to give advice on the installation of gas appliances, If this had been a large hp installation he would not have said that should'nt be there, as, GQuigley67 says, they are there for us to isolate an appliance not for the consumer. The ECV is for isolation in the event of an emergency ,then you call out the proffessionals,-------US------- not a fire investigator.

aye right, you run into a kitchen cause the hob is on fire and you start emptying the cupboards on the left and right of the hob to find the "service" valve or you exit the kitchen and find the gas meter and "emergency" control valve, big choice
