our boiler at home is covered with homeserve insurance, simply because the parts on a boiler can be bloody expensive and they always seem to go kaput when its cold ie near crimbo.

anyway boiler pressure keeps dropping, hmmm checked blow off and all good, checked for leaks all good. so looking at exp vessel problem.

rings homeserve, engineer rings back asks some questions i tell him its the exp vessel he says oh no it won't be that. i says its the exp vessel, no its not he said, you have a leak. no i don't.....yes you do. no i don't i'm a bloody plumber you know and its the exp vessel. no its not, i'll be there in an hour..........

it was the expansion vessel!!. idiot coming back today to fit external expansion vessel.

I bet he turns up with the wrong size, has a look and says he hasn't seen one of those or doesn't turn up at all.

One of my friends had a similar experience with warm front. Said it would be a massive job then never turned up. funny enough it was the expansion vessel - easy diagnosis - water comes out the valve! changed it took about 5 mins then checked for leaks with coffee in hand.

lol it makes me laugh how sumtimes a person who thinks he knows what hes doing hasnt got the first bit of a clue what the hell he's looking for, makes me wonder how people actually pass tests and exams at times.

You are describing my last boss perfectly... 20 years experience 20 brain cells

My advise to all Homecare and other monthly scheme members is simple

You are being ripped off !!!

and being given poor service and help making huge profits for the companies running these rip off policies for the privilege

There is no reason for anyone to be a member of these rip off cover plans, they are not cheap and if you add up what you pay over a number of years, there is no way you will pay that much on repairs

The only argument people can give me to be a member of these plans is it works out at small payments a month, say £ 13

That is £156.00 a year ! or £1560 over ten years !,no way will people spend that much on boiler repairs

What I say to customer is talk to other family , friends, neighbours, work colleges ect and find out who is paying for these expensive poor service schemes and get together, stop paying the fat greedy companies

Say you get twenty people,(often when you ask about you will end up with a lot more),open an building society account and get direct debits set up for £ 13 a month, that is £260,that equates to £ 3120 over the year , £ 31,200 over 10 years, even if you spend half that on repairs by a reliable independant heating engineer, which you will not,you can have a hell of a party/holiday with that

imho

In all fairness to the guy how was he to know that you know what you are talking about, I have had plenty of people call me up with a self diagnosed fault and they want me to replace the part and it turns out it wasnt even the problem. I refuse to just fit a part without diagnosing it myself unless they agree to a fixed fee to replace the part they diagnosed regardless of whether it sorts the problem or not

i am with mfgs ,had customers last winter calling and asking me to buy particular part and fit it ,I said i can not as i need to diagnose but then they did not want to pay for that so i said sory can not help you

i get your point but even when he turned up he was reluctant to even check the exp vessel as a possibility. i had to get my foot pump and prove it to him! he was a complete 'i know best' kind of person who clearly knew little! he wanted to rip up all my carpets to try and find a non existent leak.

he did however look suitably red faced when he realised i was right.
