Hot water tank top outlet fitting

hi all,

i am am looking at fitting a surrey flange to the top of my hot water tank.

The current arrangement is a 28mm pipe going into a 31mm outer diameter right angle bend which goes directly into what must be a 33mm(?) compression fitting outlet on the tank. I have searched and searched but can't find any reference to a hot water tank inlet fitting which can accommodate a 31mm pipe.

is this unusual, has anyone seen this arrangement before?

The surrey flange I have had a 22mm side outlet and 28mm top outlet. Do you think the tank to fange connection will fit?

also do you think the pipe looks copper or iron?

welcome to the forums
the pipe is copper, the fitting the 28 mm pipe goes into is a 28mm fitting as will be the compression fitting.

thanks for the reply. I think I might have mislead you with a poor pic. The pipe you can see is a 31mm outer diameter femail right angle joint which the 28mm pipe slots into. The new pic shows where the 28mm pipe goes into the right angle joint which goes into the compression joint pic. The use of a 31mm outer diameter joint going into a oversize compression joint is what's confusing ..,

As it's an unlagged tank it could even be an old skool 2-part "cylinder union", one of the elderly on here might be able to advise 🙂 Only jokin guys

If it's not leaking leave well alone and get a plumber in 😀

You have a 28mm bent cylinder Union. With a 1inch adaptor. It's a union, not a compression fitting.
Like this if you remove it from the cylinder.

You would be better installing an Essex boss to the side of the cylinder. These need drilling in! Be confident, or get a plumber. 1 hour job.

Can you believe the price of this fitting ! I had to get a 22mm swept Tee for a job (Yorkshire) Over £50. and nothing like the old style Tee that had a proper sweep on it,

I had to try and explain the difference between a swept bend and a 90 at a Pipe Center last week, working on an old converted gravity one pipe system...........
