The Tara Plumbing Family went to visit that site at Hadrians wall in July and we were all fascinated to see the toilets.
I put a postcard & comment about it on my blog:
What were toilets like in Roman times? | Mrs Tara Plumbing

What is curious to me is that is seems instinctive to be private when we poo - but that probably is learnt behaviour and not instinct at all.

The Minoans built Knossos around 1900 bc. It had hypocaust heating which meant running hot and cold water and flushing toilets from rain water or cisterns buried in the walls.

People who live around wall don't have toilets , running water or wifi a few hundred years later.

you poo in private ad out of site so that something bigger than you cant catch you for lunch, its instinctive 🙂 after all you cant run very fast when your mid flow!

if you watch cattle being milked, when you scare them its green pooh mayhem then they try and run, less weight to carry 🙂
