As the title says how do you achieve the title of master plumber ? Would be nice to have on the van one day ! Pretty tough title to get ?

Taken from the CIPHE website,
[h=1]Awards[/h][h=2]Master Plumber Certificate[/h]The term Master Plumber is now a name synonymous with excellent workmanship. The Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering, the Worshipful Company of Plumbers and the City & Guilds of London Institute award the Certificate jointly, with full backing from ECuk and valuable input from the National Association of Plumbing Teachers. The aim of the Certificate is to heighten the level of achievement one can attain as a plumber.
Requirements for recipients of the Master Plumber Certificate are strict. Any Member (MCIPHE) or Fellow (FCIPHE) of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering can apply for the Master Plumber Certificate provided the minimum criteria below has been attained and clearly demonstrated :

  • that they are a Member (MCIPHE) or Fellow (FCIPHE) of the CIPHE and also hold the description of 'Registered Plumber';
  • that they are qualified to City & Guilds Advanced Craft Level or S/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent and be accepted for City & Guilds Licentiateship;
  • that they are registered with ECuk at either Engineering Technician/ Incoporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer level;
  • that they conform to the CIPHE's Code of Professional Standards while in membership of the Institute;
  • that the applicant has been engaged in the industry for at least 10 years;
  • that there are no significant complaints on the applicant's Institute record;
  • that two nominated referees sign the application.
The scheme enhances the status of Registered Plumbers who hold the Certificate by showing that they care enough about high standards in plumbing to take their own ability to a height associated with Mastery of the art, craft, science and practice of plumbing. Following submission of all relevant documents, successful applicants will receive a certificate carrying the signatures of the President of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering, the Master of the Worshipful Company of Plumbers and the Chairman of the City & Guilds of London Institute respectively.

[h=2]City & Guilds Senior Awards[/h]City & Guilds Licentiateship (LCGI), Graduateship (GCGI) and Membership (MCGI) recognise personal achievement and the application of professional knowledge in the workplace, allowing progression to the very highest levels of achievement. They are similar in level to foundation, honours and masters degree levels and are tailor-made to match individual workplace experience.
Membership with CIPHE can assist with obtaining an award with City & Guilds at Licentiateship and Graduateship levels.
For further information on Senior Awards, please contact City & Guilds direct on 020 7294 8220, email [email protected], website www.city-and-guilds.co.uk/seniorawards.

C&G level three is a master plumber.

Its probably equal to level 4 in terms of paper qualifications, which is equivalent to the Licentiateship at City and Guilds.

However, the biggy is the ten years experience you have to prove, on top of the application portfolio. This is double the requirement in experiential years demanded of the German Meister, which only requires only 5 years.

However, in Germany they respect this and it is a regulatory requirement to set up a business, which may be the flaw with our system.

I'm just repeating what it says at the top if the C&G paperwork.

IMHO you can judge a master plumber by the quality of his work not the sticker on his van 😉

I agree, but it is a shame that the title has no meaning in the uk, nor does it have benefits for the installer in having it.

Its difficult to judge such a thing as 'quality', because we all have our own personal critieria which are formed by our own experiences of plumbing. The public don't know either. One of my own customers chose a bathroom firm and spent 17k on a lovely installation which involved the shower, two basins, bidet, and bath discharge into a 32mm waste pipe - it looked nice though!

By coming to a consensus on quality we can produce a standard, however these have been misinterpreted by those who make our qualifications. If standards become meaningless, so does quality.

Therefore Howsie, you are right!

in a nut shell,,,,,££££££££££££

if you cant get it by not paying for it then its worthless imo.

ten years as a plumber doing maintainence in a small building would prove nothing

I disagree. Fixing and problem solving contribute to stochastic art - which is the ability to deal with problems that are not of your own making. Time moves on and technologies change, so new learning is always required.

I am a jobbing plumber and I consider my knowledge and skills of value, even though, over thirty years its mainly been in small buildings. I am still learning and adding to that knowledge.
