I have a toilet cistern with a standard style plastic valve and float, that tends to howl and shriek as the valve closes when the cistern is almost full. I've tried cleaning it all, and replacing the rubber diaphragm, but with limited effect. I've tried adjusting the float arm and varying the flow rate into the cistern, but the water pressure is fairly low anyway, so the valve closes quite slowly, and this may contribute to the problem.

It's quite an old cistern, very narrow front to back, so the float has very little clearance. As a result of this cramped fit, I haven't been able to find a modern float valve assembly to completely replace the old one (which still looks in good condition).

I'm reluctant to replace the whole cistern just for a valve issue unless there's no other solution, as that will involve a fair bit of reworking of stuff around it.

Before I do any more serious work, does anyone have any other suggestions I might try?

Thanks for the rapid response :icon7:

Unfortunately the cistern is a side entry, and if I have to reroute the pipework, cut a bottom entry, etc., I might just as well replace & replumb the whole thing.

Looking for part 4 valves did lead me to a Wirquin side entry float valve with "rotating head for narrow cisterns", so that's something I can try :bandana:

I'm not a great fan of torbec valves, but they do a side entry that would probably solve your problem.

Siamp do a side entry valve too.

You should be able to find a valve to fit and resolve your issues though.
