I was asked today by a customer the purpose of the lead bung fitted to the side of the cistern of his wc. The toliet is an old trent ware type probably mid sixties. It is not a one off as his other wc has exactly the same thing.

Hi. I know a bit but not that bit. Can you post a photo?

Sorry can't as I have left now for a while. The plug is about 1/2" dia and 1/4" thick located on the left hand side mid position front to back and about 2" down from top of cistern. The overflow and feed are both on the underside of the cistern. Hope this helps

Err!

Age has some advantages to sometimes help try to explain the inobvious.

In the old days every area had their own water authority and any appliance fitted in their area was required to be stamped with the appropiate test mark. As an apprentice and young man I was sometimes given fittings to take down to our local water authority testing station, to be tested and then stamped so we could use them in our area.

The lead plug is where they stamped the approval mark on a cistern.
