Leak inside boiler (Grant Vortex 36)

Hello

My boiler is leaking as shown in the image below. Seems to be a every so small pressurized jet of water coming from the area shown.

What area is this? Is it safe to unscrew it and apply some sort of sealant and re tighten?

Any advice gratefully received 🙂

That's your pump valve, PLEASE do not try to fix it, manage it with towels and get a central heating or boiler engineer in.

Okay notched it up a little, say a little more than 1 / 4 turn. Leaking less but still dribbling.

I should have also said that I presume this leak is the cause of there being no "system pressure" showing on the gauge?

Anyways I have added some more water to system and it has fired up happy.

The 20mm head i was turning would defiantly turn a lot more if i wanted it too. Should I try that or do I risk damaging things internally?

Looks like the fibre washer on the stem plate. A new valve is required not difficuly for someone in the know.

It will turn more because the washer is torn. Easy fixed if you know what you are doing or drain it down and replace it might be your best option. Next year it will be the plate heat exchanger (just above the pump) that will be leaking.

You need a pump valve. A standard one will do from a plumbers merchants or even screwfix. You will need the gate valve type, I cant remember if its 28mm or 22mm. You shouldnt need to drain the whole system you can isolate the boiler with the butterfly valve on the top and the check valve should sort the rest out I presume its a combi looking at it.

It is on the hw side so the heat bank will need drained to swap it. Easier to back it off and ptfe it. It will work just the same.

Yes its a combi. I think I will try locating the "butterfly value" and try and use PTFE as a short term solution and then get someone over to me soon to give it the full once over.

This is a common problem on these make sure your expansion vesel is charged up and as its a 36kw boiler you may need another exp vessell

As Kimbo said, it's a big combi, probably on a big system. The standard ev might not be man enough for the job.
