Whilst doing a bathroom for a punter he asked me to check the mains stop tap in the kitchen - it's leaking - does not appear to be coming from the spindle but further down the tap body near the base. As its the main stopcock I am more than a little wary of this - is it likely to need a complete new tap?

cheers

turn off the supply in the road/boundary and pop in a new stopcock, no problems with that surely

Don't bother trying to change washers in stopcocks - it's right hassle and they only cost about £8 new anyway. I only ever change washers if you can't get to the pipe easily but you've got to be careful not to damage the pipe by twisting.
