When do I have to line a flue, Im reading through everything trying to find info on lining a flue. Im asuming the gas fire thats going to be fitted will be Inset live fuel or radiant or something, maybe maybe not. If i smoke bomb the chimney and check there are no leaks am I ok, considering its structurally sound or to play it safe should i line it??? To be honest I dont want to just have to line flues just because. Is there building regs that state that i have to line it or will MI say i need to??????? Thanks

Ok, yes if MI state lining the flue then I would.
Can I use a existing brick chimney to fit a gas fire without lining it. I would first have it swept then test with a smoke bomb to check for leaks. If all ok could I not line it? I have read through Building reg appoved doc J and it seems to say if its sound then I can but I want to know what other people think????

If it passes all flue checks and gas fire is suitable for type of flue then generally no need for a liner.

visual checks, smoke test 2. if needed get it cleaned. If you are unsure and think there maybe a problem then smoke test 1 will show problems up or just line the buga.

Hobo it's best practice to sweep. Don't just scrape the barrel, own the barrel!

If the chimney has never been used for solid fuel generally it won't need sweeping.

Back in the bbu days people would get the sweep in before we fitted the bbu. They would get a small dust pan full of soot.
We dropped the liner 10 minutes later and there would be a half bucket brought down with that.

Cheers guys, I will use my noggin to decide, prob best to just have it swept. As Ermintrude said " Own the barrel"
