hey hows it going. I recently thought about going into sub contracting. for the past 8 years iv worked for some one else and figure its time to move on. im happy to work all around the uk. would prefere working in a northern city/town and get into a building site where I can do the same thing for a few months. iv worked domesticly for along time. and although I take alot of pride in my work I fancy a change and would like to work alot more on new build.

so as far as setting up as a sub contractor what are the main things I need to do.

set up a buisness name
apply for cscs card
apply for gas safe card

find a contractor,,,.>>>??? there must be hundreds of different plumbing agencys about.

cheers for any feedback.

If you have steady employment at the moment ,would advise you stay were you are for now, plan ahead and get things in place but maybe put of till next year

There are lots of agencies that will take you details with promises of work ,when they have none, just want your detail to put on their data base, so they can say they have 'x' amount of plumbers on the books when someone comes knocking, trouble is ,the only knocking that is happening, is when payment time comes around 🙁

imho

new builds are slowly dieing at the moment mate in scotland anyhow just got payed off couple of months back from my job which was commercial new builds, and so is near enough every1 else i know who work on building sites etc...

i'm concentrating on the domestic market now as there seems to still be work there

yeah iv recently lost my job. so looking at a quick fix when i get back from france. il be away for a month so when I got back I was hoping to get things moving.

Very little new build domestic stuff down here (Bristol area). Within a mile of me, there is a block of flats that was finished 15 months ago, and none have sold. It is completely empty, and getting windows smashed and vandalised all the time.

Very slow on sites.

Im currently working for a new build social housing company in Glasgow, and it is one of the biggest. However, as everyone is expecting massive cuts are due to be made. This being said, the company has said that it is still gaining work. Hopefully we dont get hit too much! Im books in with this company, so making massive amounts is not probible. Sub contract work and having folk working for you on a building site would be what id like to aim for, especially a large ongoing site.
