I know it is a long shot and a quick search shows me the general response to this type of thread but I thought I would give a shot.

I currently work for Carillion as an improver and have done for the past 2years(6months for free, yep the old fast track routine) I know it is kinda frowned apon but when your in your late 20's and nobody wants to give you a chance there isn't much you can do.

The reason I want to leave is I am not learning here anymore, I'm based in London and used to travel to west sussex just so I could work on S and Y plan systems, OV and system boilers and now that has come to an end I'm back chucking in combi's left right and centre it's getting boring. I wouldn't mind but its all social housing, the same 831 regardless of the property I think you kinda get my point

I was wondering if anyone knew of any private firms around london, kent.essex that was taking people on, tbh money doesn't intrest me I pick up 26,000 a year as an improver at Carillion so would be happy to work for anything around that aslong as I'm learning.

I was thinking about working as a subby but with 2 kids I don't really wanna go down that route.

money doesn't really interest me GQ, I want to learn, weather is old stuff, or new stuff as long as I'm learning I'm happy

Stick with it, all I did for my first year was wall chases with a hammere and bolster, gutter down pipes, clean up and basic pipework. And I did that for £42 a week and it wasnt that long ago.

If its guaranteed work every week then Id stick with it for now, lots of companys are still going bust and at least you've got work at the mo.

do you have gas quals? if not you are kidding yourself on thinking you will move for more money, and TBH even if you have your gas £26k is not too bad in these present times, best to sit it out and stick with a big company like Carillion, who will want their pound of flesh but will "make" you do everything right which ensures you dont get caught out

Yes I do Kirk, I'm out doing exactly the same job as a full engineer and get 8k a year less I wouldn't mind if I was learning but I'm not so I'm looking around for something new, I could properly "blag" myself an engineers job but would rather be straight with people and let them know I'm still got a lot to learn

good attitude, i know you feel u aint learning but wrking on comibis you will pick up alot without knowing it. keep asking questions and dont jump ship easily

as others have said, keep at it and keep learning, you have only been working in gas for 2 yrs that is nothing, you have a long way to go, i'm not having a go by any means, but you arent ready to go out on your own, you say you are not learning but you are being harsh on yourself you are getting faster and better every time you do an install and every time to solve a problem, there are many many guys out there who would kill you for your £26k job after only 2yrs in the job, how do you find Carillion? i used to be scottish gas manager, till i got a bit bored and went into training full time, I have been to the Battersea office a few times when they were trialing the Fusion system for the PDA's, everything is safety, safety and safety but it isnt a bad thing when new to the trade, 10/10 for you wanting to keep pushing yourself on, but it is difficult to get into repairs and fault finding, you could move to a repair company on £23-25k and get bumped after a few weeks if your 1st fix isnt high enough and you are buying too many parts,

It's not to bad we use the cognito system on the PDA's now(not sure if that is something to do with fusion), ALOT of health and saftey stuff to fill in daily (10-15minutes a day eforms), TBH I don't really know that many people at the battersea office, only meet a guy named Zack who come give us some PDA training while working up in horsham. After reflecting on everyone comments I should be count myself lucky really I know it took me almost 2years to even get on Carillion after pestering the life out of them. Thanks all for your great words of advice it nice to get some inpartial input.

sorry for the deley been on a stag do ) I've decided to stick it out until the end of the summer and see what is out there then )
