Currently got a mountain bike that is in bits in the garage waiting to be repaired after it received a hammering on its last outing.

I'm now looking at buying a mid range road bike though. Something with a bit of comfort. Anyone got any sensible recommendations for road bikes?

Steer clear of giant. I paid 500 for a hybrid the roam 2 to be precise. Really nice bike was great for about a month. They wormed there way out the free service. The gears then started to try and change on there own. Took it to an independant bike shop who alterted it they pointed out that several teeth on the cogs where missing. 3 weeks later the gears lost sync again. Now it skips middle gear altogether. I then bought a bottle and holder. Putting it on one of the allen bolts completly sheered away from the frame so its now held on with one bolt.

I've got a Giant MTB. Had it a few years, it's lasted well but has a few niggles & I probably wouldn't get another Giant. Had to fix so much on it over the years & not just general wear & tear. The build quality on it is poor.

What would you recommend?

Trek seem good bikes. Few of the lads going over to france for the tour de france on there treks this year. Expensive but they aint had any problems with them.

As for giant the build quality on them is shocking for the price.

What about claud butler, use to ride these years back and never had trouble

Didn't know Claud Butler did road bikes!

Had a MB a few years back & it was like riding on thin air! So light & responsive! Was in an accident on it though so obviously had to scrap it.
