Hi everyone,

My mother-in-laws cistern has started to make a loud noise when it is filling up. When she turns on the tap in the bathroom, the noise stops.

Do the pipes just need padding wrapped round them to stop them vibrating? Or do you think its something else.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, fitzsy

Does the cistern have a ball cran (older style) or a more modern Torbreck style?.

A picture would help.

Are the pipes rattling, or noise from inside cistern?.

More info required before anyone can suggest a cure.

Take off the the cistern lid, flush the toilet and hold the ball valve/torbeck fitting in the closed position then let water in gradually. If noise stops/starts when your playing with the valve. Thats your problem.

New washer, or if that doesn't fix it, additional pipe brackets where the pipe is oscillating.

Ballcock is past its sell by date, seal worn or moving parts heavily scaled. Fit a part 2 item if your current one is brass.🙂

Thanks to everyone for the excellent advice!
I will be fixing it in the morning.
