well you cant change the fan,as its a pre mix carrying gas and air and the combustion cover and manifold and gas valve has to come out to replace it,then theres a uprated heat exchanger gasket to replace,then a fga to carry out cut your losses and get either a good independent gsr engineer in or sting bg with a one off repair

i doubt it has anything to do with the pcb wiring a fan normally wired via a boiler pcb protected by a fuse direct to the mains is a very foolish thing to do you may have already caused feed back into the board not wishing to be rude save your mate some real money,quit while your ahead

theres nothing to say a sparks cant fault a boiler but lots of boilers will suffer feed back if you wire parts direct to mains in particulre the pcb in the fan,and any way i am to tired to argue stick a axe trough the middle of it and buy a baxi job done

I'm with Gas man on this one, your an electrical engineer, not a gas engineer.
anything inside a boiler shouldnt be touched unless you are a gas engineer its the law, you can only work on your own boiler if your not GSR and you have the relevant qualifications, you can't work on any boilers at all if you don't have qualifications in gas. So you shouldnt be touching your mates boiler, I can understand your just trying to help but there is a reason why only gas engineers are allowed to work on boilers because we have been taught in how they work, and how to safely test them. Don't take this the wrong way, it is the law only Gas Safe Engineers can work on boilers and it is that way for a reason.

How are you saving your mate money? Get a gsr engineer to fix it. If your not gsr you shouldn't be playing with things that can kill, simple as that. For somebody as experienced and qualified as you say its not rocket science, horses for courses and it's not your course.
I'm suprised glowworm Tech line have even been helping you without telling them a Gas Safe Number, what you are doing is illegal and dangerous I'm not saying all this just to patronise you or whatever I'm just stating the facts, no one should be messing with boilers unless they know what they are doing. There is a reason why there is such a thing as the Gas Safe Register where people get assessed and inspected regularly to make sure they are working safely and not creating dangers to the public. Just because your an experienced electrical engineer doesnt give you the right to be working on domestic boilers which are GAS appliances

to be safe, from what you describe, you need a new fan assembly and the pcb is proberbly now mullered imho. so could work out to be around £220 worth.
that of course is less fitting, so break it to your mate gently and advise him you saved him at least £40 on diagnosis.

LOl read all this last night, why as he edited all his posts ? think he might have an electrical fault, mind you i read in one of his posts him bulling him self up about being so qualified, so he shouldnt have a problem with an electrical fault then !
