Hi,

I moved into a (old?) flat recently and found the water pipes are very noisy!
My flat has got many pipes and a cylinder container (about 1 meter high) to keep (or heat?) the hot water.
I tested that after I use hot water the noise comes up for a while. The noise is like water flowing and I can not feel any vibration when I touch the pipe by my fingers.

More serious is even I don't use hot water, the noise also happens and sometimes it continues for half an hour. I guess it is caused by using hot water by the people in ground floor (my flat is first floor).

I got a thinking:
The pipes and cylinder container in my flat have accumulated a lot of vapor from the very hot water for a long time. This will cause noise when fill in water because the pressure will increases but wont cause noise when water flow out.

If my thinking is correct, can I do something to release the water vapor?
If my thinking is not correct, what do you think and what I can do?

I would be very appreciated for any suggestions.

Do you have an immersion heater. If you do it may be the sound of the water heating back up

Try turning the power off to the immersion and the noise will go in a few seconds. But don't leave it off as you will have no ho****er

Thank you.

I don't know if I have an immersion heater or not. I only know a very hot cylinder container (about 1 meter high).

Do you have a central heating system? If so, is it water or electric?

I don't know! What I know is a hot cylinder container (about 1 meter high). I don't know if the hot water comes from outside or cool water comes from outside and is heated in the container (like a boiler?)
