Can i fit a push fit isolation valve on ground floor heating pipe without draining system so i can fit new heated towel rail in a day or two,or would the pressure of water be too great once I've cut through pipe, its on a combi system,
thanks

Best not to fit isolation valves on a heating system and you will need to drain down

Be careful on heating, when you cut the flow or return. It can if not isolated, come from both directions.

So tempted to say yeah it'll be all good. Have a hanky ready incase there's the odd drip....

I think the very fact that you're asking this question would indicate that you're out of your depth and there may be trouble ahead. Why not get a couple of quotes done and consider your options?

If it´s a pressurized system Then no but if its gravity fed then just plug the feed and vent pipe at the header tank to create a vacuum. You really need to no what your doing here though as it can go very wrong. As said previously it can flow from both directions. And you should use a full bore lever or gate valve, not a push fit. Plenty off old towels and wellies may be required.

A friend once asked me if he could ' snatch ' a fitting onto a water main in a pub cellar !

I said that it would be unadviseable and it would not be something I would attempt personally.

He ignored my advice and listened to some muppet that told him it was the best thing to do.

Ten minutes later he was in tears on the phone and ankle deep in water.

I felt sorry for him but it was ..........very ......very .......funny.

I remember laughing furiously as I put the phone down, unable to assist.

Anywayz, back to the thread.
If your inexperienced at this job, my advice would be not to bother and get a plumber.

did he try and do it with the stop tap closed ?

No, he was changing the stop tap. He didn't turn outside main stop tap off, he just cut it.
Then he couldn't get to it because it was in back of kitchen unit and he had no stop tap key for outside either.

Really funny. Shouldn't laugh.

no with the new one shut 😀 always leave it open with some speedfit on the end to divert the water

Sod that laugh your head off, I laughed reading It haha

"Sod thay" haha I hate the no swearing rule

I have snatched a few things over the years!!

it is NOT for the feint hearted, and snatching on a heating system is a totally different ball park to mains!

Mains has to be a VERY last resort! pocket full of speedy caps ftw

If I really had to do it, with no other option, like, freezing or turning outside tap off, I would.

I would also leave the new stop tap open shaun, just as you said, I have done things like this before and it can be fun and does make you feel a bit like Red Adair for a few minutes.

Alas, the individual in question was too stupid to think of that and decided :-
1/ To ignore me and my advice
2/ Cut the pipe without much preparation or thought at all.
3/ Fight through a torrent of water in a cupboard, which must have been like looking upward in Niagara falls, to feel around for where the pipe was.
4/ Wishing he had listened to my advice, rang me to hear me laugh like a drain.
5/ Eventually quit trying to become a plumber.

ok took all your advice, drained the system down and removed rad, time consuming but relatively easy job
just so I dont have to drain the system again i will leave the JG Speedfit 15HSVP Isolating Valve's in place

Would never recommend isolation valves on a heating system as they can clog and generally won't work when you want them to anyway

Yeah I'm definitely gonna say yes you can!!!!!!
Depending on what type of job it is make sure Yer public liability is fully paid up!!!!
