Yes this old chestnut again, you'd think all I do all day is outside taps...

I am fitting an o/s tap for my auntie so I priced up the bits as follows (not including a couple of quid for some 15mm copper and fittings)
Hose union backplate £4.49 (the through-wall type)
Outside tap £5.39
Double check valve £4.94

Total £14.82
That's from Plumbfix, the price is similar in most places even indies.

Now here's the reason for the thread:
An outside tap kit from toolstation is £12.36 and it includes the above items, so you've already saved £2.50, it also has a self cuttiung tap (handy to have in the toolbox), a roll of PTFE and a couple of flexis, one is a tap connector the other is a 15mm compression.
So you get your outside tap bits, although the bib tap is extremely ugly, for a lot cheaper with about a tenners worth of other bits that you may use further down the line.
Win/win!
I've put this in the arms because it includes material prices that we may not want Joe Public knowing 😉

Poofix. Nuff said. Although you have reminded me I must fit that tap for my auntie that I promised her!

Agreed about poofix, it was just eaasy to price it up there, I checked other places and you won't get the bib tap, dc valve and through-wall plate for much less anywhere I know of, even if you can get the stuff for 40% less somewhere you're still winning providing you actually use the extra stuff at some point.

Whats the quality like though joe? Doubt it will be wras.

I dont like those through the wall backplates with the round flange and the pipe attached. Simply because if you do the job correctly and drill a hole large enough to sleeve the pipe there isnt much chance of getting a fix on the plate

I use a 22mm core bit, core, hammer in 22mm , put through the 15mm and back plate, mark up and drill

the 22mm is so tight that the wall doesnt collapse in 🙂

you haven't included any means of isolation.
I like the double check valve with 1/4 turn handle, mr Ray does a good price on them £3.95 before vat.
you can get a bib tap cheaper, or one with 15mm connection ( sorry Ray, I like to shop around)

Not in the list but you'd need one whether you use parts from a kit or not so didn't think it was necessary to include, just like copper tube, a tee and any elbows you'd use. You'd still be using them if you bought the parts seperately or scavenged them from the kit 😉

*edit* Wow nice prices on that link pal.

I think they look good, I know what you mean but never had an issue, just go easy with the drill.

i use those from toolstation, like you said you get all the bits although i mix and match a bit to suit the job.

those handles are 'different but a favorite with the older people as there 1/4 turn, & easier to hang hose on!

the back plate no problem with dove-screwing and very solid

Well I bought it today and it's a bit good, but a bit meh too.
The tap is the ugliest thing I've ever seen, the picture on toolstation doesn't do its ugliness any justice.
Still works out cheaper than buying the parts individually though so will go ahead and fit it when it's not peeing down and I can use my (not waterproof) drill to make the hole from outside.
It says on the packet that it conforms to water regs, I think that's just the fact that it has a double check valve. I doubt it's WRAS though.
