Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone out there can help me out!!
When turning on the hot water in my bath I noticed that water was leaking from my header tank. I removed the tank lid (in a high cupboard-live in a flat) it all looked ok and put it down to condensation (stupid) then noticed slight trickling of water from off of the arm of the ball valve, when I got my missus to turn on the bath tap all was fine for a few seconds then water started to p*ss out the valve and continue to do so for a while after the tap was turned off. With the lid on the water is powerful enough to still leak out!! Is it a case of a new ball valve or something else?!?!? Please please please help!!!

Sounds like a simple case of changing the ball valve, is it still causing you problems now?

Hi secret squirrel lol! When i lift the ball valve up it stops, when I push it down the water starts to squirt out of the top of the valve.

To get you out of trouble you need to tie it up and to prevent any further leaking problem, this will enable you to have the water in the house/flat still on. In the morning you can then either change the ball valve yourself or get someone in to do it. If the call out fee is huge (bank holiday etc) you can still use the hot water but allow it to fill then re-tie it up. This will get you out of trouble short term.

To empty the tank a little, tie it up then open the hot tap for a few minutes, no problem.

Hope this has helped a little mate.😉

To change the ball valve is not a difficult job, I've had one too many drinks to write it down now though😕

Call me stupid but should that valve let out water like that?! I would have thought they would have made it slowly let water drip from it?! If that's the case then a new valve would be needed!?! Have I just answered my own question?!

Thanks for your help buddy, I'll get to the shops tomo for a replacement!!!

It should have a good flow of water on it, it sounds like its just "had it" you can change the washers etc but I don't bother. I just change the whole thing, much easier in the long run.

Ok I'll pick one up tomo, just worried that it may not be the problem if it's supposed to jet water like that, especially as it shuts and opens. Doesn't take much of a push down tho for it to jet out so fingers crossed it'll sort it buddy, thanks for your time and help.

I would agree easier to replace the assembly than mess about. Even for an amateur it isn't hard if you have a few tools. Just wonderin though. It isn't an old fashioned metal float that has got a bit holed and not floating properly. Probably not, but worth checking. In any event bending the float arm carefully downwards a little might enable the worn valve to close and get you over the weekend. If you do do this don't grab hold of the float to make it easier to bend as you may do damage to an old metal float.

Hi guys, thanks alot for taking the time out to answer my question, I've sorted it. I managed to remove the lid and and at the bottom of the tank was the hinged pipe which directs the water back into the tank instead of how it was-squirting out the top!!! Must have been held together with tape because it's the wrong diameter screw thread!!
