Plumbing Advise!

Hello,

Merry Xmas to you all 🙂

Im currently in the welding/fabricating trade and looking to start out in plumbing trade.Hopefully starting Tech cert 6219 at my local college next year.

With me being 36 years old,self employed is possibly the only way to go?
Would it be of a more advantage to try and gain an acs cert or can a good living be made with out it?

Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

Better getting ACS as well. Its become the standard for nearly all Plumbers now.

As you are already in the welding / fabricating trade, have you considered training in pipeline work? You are already halfway there if you have welding qualifications.

Pick up as many trades as you can that way you will never be without work.

Actually if you have welding certificates and say you got a job as a JIB Plumber then you would get extra on your hourly rate.

In some companies Plumbers do welding both gas and arc and plenty still do lead welding.

Its mostly LCS pipe work.

So if your going self employed you can put in for Plumbing work on big jobs.

Actually you may find you get "sucked up" by all kinds of companies, if you have Plumbing, gas and welding.

They are very interesting indeed.I have qualifications in welding so i hope this will be a big +++.

Another route ive been thing about are the gas companys such as British Gas and the like.I now you would have to hold an asc in most cases.Would i need to be time served to really stand a chance of getting employed by these?

I now BG do there own training.

Any thoughts on this route?

Will try and gain experience through a gas/plumber hopefully.

Hi! Andy,

No I think BG or any of them will take you on okay.

They tend to look at qualification not where or how you got them.

The only thing is, I think you may find, BG or as it is now Centrica, give a lot of the work out to sub contract companies.

But BG would probably give you contact numbers if they never had anything on themselves.

With welding you could try the oil refineries, chemical and all kinds of industrial plant depending on where you live.

Its amazing where Plumbers and welders actually do work and who for.

But if you still want to go down the self employed domestic road, then BG will usually give you work. Some say their prices are okay, I found them tight.

It all depends on how fast you are.

At least working self employed for BG doesn't or didn't involve laying out for materials and all you risked or risk is your labour.

I recently asked i gas engineer about the acs exam and he told me that you need to gain 100% pass rate....

Not sure on what part this is?Just wondering if its mostly technical or safety based?
