Pop-up sink plug - help needed!

Hello all. I'm new to this forum and wonder if someone can help me with a pop-up plug problem.

I had a new bathroom fitted last year (by a very shoddy company, it has to be said) and the bathroom sink has a pop-up plug. I think that is the right term for it...you pull a lever on the back of the taps and a chrome circle rises to let water out.

The problem I have is that the chrome circle is barely rising at all now and so it is taking ages for the water to drain away. I can see the rods that move the circle at the back of the sink but I'm not sure what to do to make them push the circle up higher. I'd like to be able to fix this myself if possible.

Any advice (and diagrams!) much appreciated.

A few things to try:-
Firstly with plug (Chrome circle) up, get finger nails under and gently pull up. Does the plug come out? If so you should find a back nut that you can adjust.
If not, look at the bars underneath. The bit that joins the two bars together should have 2 flat head screws. Loosen these and adjust accordingly.
Thirdly if lifting the plug out doesnt work, try twisting the plug anti-clockwise and see if it unscrews. If so, same again there may be a back nut you can adjust.
To be fair these are a pain in the bum.

I can get the circle bit out, no problem. When I look into the hole that it goes into, I can just see a little metal bar which is what moves when I pull the lever on the taps. It moves okay, but looks like it doesn't lift the plug/circle unit up enough. I guess I need to adjust the rods at the back of the sink so that pressing the lever has more effect on the bar - but I don't know how to adjust them...is it just a case of loosening the screws, changing the angle of the rods, then tightening the screws again? I will give it a go when I get home tonight...I'll be back on tomorrow asking how do I reattach the sink unit to the wall!

I'd much rather have a normal plug to be honest, but it'd be tricky to fit one of those wouldn't it? There's no filter on the hole in the sink with my pop-up plug, so I'd need to fit a new connection (with filter) under the hole wouldn't i? And replace the taps as they'd look odd with the lever bit that does nothing. I'm thinking of selling the house, so it needs to look normal!

First, solve the confusion about terminologylogy : is it a pop-up that you press to close / open or is it a lever that opens and closes the waste; both seem to be called "pop-up". I have the former and it sticks in the closed position and what I get from the net is either American or or talks bout the lever type; both equally useless. If anyone knows a fix I'd appreciate the help.
