Please help. The boiler seems to be working fine except that there is no hot water.

It has been working faultlessly since last service.

Is it the Diverter valve (does it even have one?!)

If I set the controller to HW only, the boiler fires up for about 5 seconds then goes off.

As stated, the central heating is working fine/as usual.

You need a gasman to have a look, most likely diverter valve. Good luck

potterton profile 100 e is a bf boiler for use on an indirect heating system (not a combi/no plate heat exchanger), so chances are your cylinder stat may be faulty or your 2/3port valve(s) failed. call in an engineer to fault find it for you. Take a look at parts arena if your not sure before offering advice or the poor sap asking will become rather mixed up lookinf for non existant bits

oops just assumed combi from description
as cycling like that on combi for dhw points to blocked plate heat exch
as stated could be a no of things
do you have a 3 port valve or 2 two ports its really a job for an engineer as you need the multimeter to start checking the circuits

Oldplumber gets the prize!!

It was a faulty external valve made by Honeywell - not a part of the boiler itself.

This device seemed to have a small electric motor in it that was 'tired'.

Thank you all for your advice though.

Dobbie. 😀

Tell you what else it probably has not got and that is a by pass 🙁
