Removing thermostatic shower valve

Afternoon gents,

I'm trying to remove my thermostatic valve from my shower unit and the top of the valve has a hex head with notches in it (see photo), i can't get a spanner or regular socket over it, is there a special tool available to remove this?

Decent spanner should do that!

I can't get a spanner on it, it's recessed back about 20mm from the tile face

Buy a bigger socket perhaps?

not the size of the socket that's the problem it the hole in the centre is not big enough

Do you mean long enough?

Yes, i was thinking of the spindle going through the socket, but i guess a longer one would do it, i"ll have to look out for one that long. Just thought there must be a specific offset spanner type tool for this kind of thing.

There are. Box spanners or a jaw dropper would probably do it.

Nut looks too big to me, also it's octagonal where box spanners are hexagonal.

Usually get one over that. An offset spanner would do you also.
