Replacing old Mira 8

DSCF3367.jpg
Hi I'm a new member whose indulged in plumbing as a hobby for 40+ years during which time I've installed bathrooms, completely plumbed in a swimming pool with solar paving heating, changed taps [last ones in kitchen and bathroom last year just before having knee replacement!] repaired manholes, drains - in fact I've tackled pretty well everything.

But now I'm stuck with what seems to be an old [working] Mira 8 shower mixer that really needs replacing with a thermostatic one. Centres for pipework are 150mm give or take a mm. There are no visible nuts under the side cover plates but after probing a bit it looks as though there is a compression nut just under the tile surface - as someone answering another post suggested there would be! However there's only limited space around the nut once any filling has been cleared.

We really don't want any major tiling or plumbing done at our time of life but I don't see how the nuts can be unscrewed without sacrificing 2 or 3 tiles. I remember removing a similar mixer temporarily about 30 years ago but can't now remember whether the centre section came out easily once it was unscrewed. Can anyone advise on dismantling please?

Someone has also suggested that Yorkshire YP 8 connectors would be needed to convert to metric so I'm not sure whether having to use these will limit my replacement choice. I suspect I'll be getting a good plumber in - if I can locate one - but meanwhile I'd like to consider my options. So any tips or advice will be much appreciated.

Re: Replacing old Mira 8

I have now discovered from a 'spares' page on another website that the 2 side union elbows have screwed ends and not compression nuts so they should be easier to rotate once the centre valve is removed.
