Dear Experts,
Obviously I am in need of help! To comply with new Italian regulations i have to install a foot bath with overhead shower on our B&B swimming pool. To avoid wasting alot of water i would like to install a sensor at the gate so that when someone opens the gate and passes into the foot bath they cross the sensor and start the shower. I have researched on the net what is needed, but would be very grateful if someone was able to give an expert opinion. I am capable of doing all the work but do not have the experience to know what is needed in terns of sensors etc. Any help you can offer would be great. Thanks for your time.Matt.

Thermostatic mixing valve, solenoid and a sensor, I'm installing them on a hospital contract at the moment.

Thanks for the help. The shower runs on a cold water feed only as it is one of those solar showers that is basically a black cylinder that gets filled with water and heated by the sun. Just to clear. Photocell sensor (what type do you think?) connected to a solenoid valve. What about timing, lets say i want the shower to stay on for 1 minute, how can i do that?
Thanks again and in advance for any further help that can be offered!!

You either need an infra-red line break detector or a PIR with a variable time-delay. Depending on where the sensor is located, the PIR may false trigger with insects/animals.

Thanks. Have been doing more research and seem to have understood that i am in need of an Retroreflective sensor(line break detector) as your rightfully said. However will this connect directly to the solenoid valve or will i need a transformer? Again, thanks for any help that can be offered. I know they sell kits for this sort of thing but here in Italy a kit to activate the shower etc costs about £1500!!! Which is why i decided to so it myself!!! If anyone knows of companies in the uk that have websites that sell this sort or thing then i would be grateful for any links sent!!

what about a switch on the gate itself which sets the shower off when the gate is opened then add a timer to that so that it stays on for a set time.
