I have an elderly female customer who is in the middle of a house restoration. She is intending to have an old fire place removed and a period style one installed, and wishes to retain the existing (50 year old) back boiler is possible. She is panicking because she's been told by her builder that the back boiler will likely have failed due to it not having been lit for over a year (I know!) and wants me to take a look at the boiler. I have stated that I can only get a really good look at it once the existing fire place has been dismantled by her builder (although I believe it to be sound as there is not leakage from the heating system), and that she may have to be prepared to renew it if it turns out to be a sieve. Can anyone recommend a good and affordable manufacturer of solid fuel back boilers? I'm keen to get involved with this, whether it be just an inspection of the boiler to confirm that it is sound; or to replace the existing one whilst the fire place is dismantled. Thanks!

Back boiler that old could be on it's last legs.

I would switch it out for grant triple pass click here

Possibly one of the best back boilers that were made, 30 years and still selling says a lot.

The existing boiler will probably be sound if it hasn't been fired when empty but if you are thinking of a new one i agree with Pete.
Better heat output from the grant triples. Dunsley still make them too.

If it's being ripped to bits you might be better of changing it anyway. No good everything being put back together and six months down the line it springs a leak.

Grant multi pass are very good, heavy built wrap round back boilers. Very easy cleaned from the front after removing the 2 doors.
Would prefer a free standing multi fuel stove personally though, where they would suit - & there's no building around them & very efficient.

Thanks guys; I'd looked at the Grants and thought these should be ok given their reputation for other heating products. I'll keep you posted...........................:thankyou
