Hi All

As I have mentioned on other threads, we are working on an ecommerce site to sit alongside our brick and mortar business.

I have been doing some research in the last week, particularly looking at sites offering boilers and other heating products online.

The ones I have researched most thoroughly are Plumbnation, Discounted Heating, Boilers2Go, BHL, Direct Heating Supplies, PTS CEN and Ultimate Discount (also known as Mr Central Heating and Compass).

I have been looking at their prices, delivery costs and times etc, but what I can't tell easily is the quality of service that they give.

A few questions:

1) Do any of you use them occasionally/regularly?

2) If so, what is the service like?

3) If you don't, is there any reason why not?

4) I see that most of them say 3-5 day delivery. Is that any good? I had expected to offer next day delivery, or 48 hours latest for orders placed late. Are we trying too hard?

5) Have I missed any really important ones? (I also have a Plumbfix book). There are loads out there, but most seem to be offering either indifferent pricing or a narrow product range.

Our aim is to set up an ecommerce site that mirrors our normal business - ie trade-only, human service, known brands, cheap nett prices, no frills. Although anyone will be able to view the site, prices and "buy now" will be hidden unless you log in, and you will only be allowed access if you are genuinely in the trade. That allows our trade customers to show the end user what they are getting, without compromising the trade prices. (although to be honest, on boilers particularly, there ain't much in it). Existing Williams customers will get access by using their account ID, and GSRs by using their GSR number and postcode - we can automate this. Others potential customers will need to prove their trade status manually.

We also want to make it a bit more human than the average web-purchase experience, so we will encourage people to call us, and we will actively try to call customers with queries about their orders - rather than email or text.

I would be interested in any views - what you love about sites you buy from, and what you hate about others.

When we are closer to launching, we will also be looking for a small and select band of site testers to give us feedback before we launch, and to test the various carriers and packaging. There will be some freebies etc for those who help, so PM me if you are interested. (But it will require some work, and being prepared to engage in some real transactions).

One final question - would the fact that we sponsor the forum make you more likely/less likely to trade online with us? Or no difference? You can answer that privately in a PM if you prefer 🙂

Thanks in advance.

Ray

Price and availability are the two for me. I don't tend to use the ones listed as they tend to be more than a little vague on delivery. If you are offering a 48hr delivery then that will do for me.

I don't like the screwfix site anymore, you need to be too specific, I like the toolstation site, nice and simple plus it seems to load quicker than the screwfix site. The screwfix site has too much 'flowery' stuff. When I go onto a site I know what I want I don't want to see a lot of guff that I'm not interested in.

and yes I would consider your site more often as a sponsor of the site.

Used mr central heating a good few times never had an issue, always on time and correct.

If I remember rightly its free delivery as well just got to be on certain days when there wagon heads your way

It would make me more likely to use someone that is a forum sponsor but honestly price is probably the main factor

I've used BES.co.uk a few times, never had any problems with them but as said before I'd rather use a forum sponsor if it's within my power to do so!

i agree on the forum i would use more likely ! and delivery if a big deal ! also being clear on what happens if the product if damaged when it arrives ?

I wouldn't use a certain supplier just because they are a forum sponsor but I would if they are also an active member contributing regularly like yourself. It means that if I did have any issues I'd have the confidence that you'd deal with it.
If you can do a 24hour delivery on items ordered late then that would also be a big plus for them last minute things.

3 if its broke when I fit it I d have to wait 3-5 days for a replacement

I happily give honest traders a go. If they deliver what they promise and the price is right then I would have no problem using you for boilers/flues/fittings.
I have used BES, Gas Appliance Spares, BHL, Boilers2go. The only one I had problems with were Boilers2go but they fixed their error at their expense which was fair enough in my book.

I don't mind any chocolate sweets as long as they don't have peanuts in them..

Price and service are obviously paramount. I'd be more likely to use a forum sponsor, and a more human approach is preferable as well. Also if your on the forum in the evening your accountable. I usually avoid online suppliers I'm to worried about damage, delivery times etc.

Yes, that had crossed my mind. 🙂 I would try to find a way of handling that separately, because I don't think that forum admin would want the forum to become our online customer service desk.

On the other hand, knowing that any failings that were unresolved were likely to get broadcast to thousands of plumbers would tend to keep us honest.

I caveat this with I buy bathroom suites online. I don't fit boilers myself but here's my reasoning when it comes to bathrooms: -

1.) I now buy 100% of my bathroom suites and fittings/cabinets etc online.
2.) Very difficult to find an online company offering good service and returns policy, but when you find one the better discounts make them much more appealing than local merchant imo.
3.) N/A.
4.) For bathrooms 3-5 day delivery is fine, I arrange for all the items to arrive well before the start of the job so I can check them over and sort out any issues prior to starting.

I do buy some heating spares online and actually when I was in Fareham (used to live there) I bought a lot of stuff from Heating & Plumbing Supplies online website. I really liked the fact that I was in control of my costs when I ordered this way. No need to phone up the branch for pricing, you could quote for the customer there and then.

On bathrooms, the reason I stopped using brick and mortar shops is 30% or so off list price = the same price a customer can buy the item for online which means no profit for me at all. That seems a mad way to operate a business.

A few of the online suppliers I use offer 45-50% off list price to traders which is much cheaper than my customers can buy items for online.

Hope some of this is useful!

My local suppliers take there good customers to Arizona. I'd gladly use Mr Staffordshire outlet if the insentives are as good.

iPad autocorrect at it again? Or have I been promoted from a town to a county? 🙂

'fraid not on the Arizona thing. You'll be lucky if I treat you at the burger van.

Oh well they haven't invited me yet anyway. I will learn one day to read my posts prior to posting.

all my boilers come from mr central heating they charge a tenner delivery never had any issues use bes as well no probs there either

One small thing I would like is a box listing how many items there are in my basket and how much it totals to including vat. If there's a flat rate for delivery it'd be great if it included that as well. The more transparency the better.

I'd like a blonde buxom beauty mopping my fevered brow as i'm placing an order - That possible Ray?
