So guys, I have been wondering what all you guys have invented in your vans to store all the short lengths of pipe about a metre long you have left over from jobs? I have seen tom plumbs way, in the pipe rack with the circuler end of a drain rod. I think thats what it is any way.

I was thinking of just cutting a short bit of soil pipe and attaching it to the steel bulkhead in my van.

I would like to know what you guys have done.

It could be interesting.

Mine at the moment are all rolling around in the back of my van. Very untidy

like you said a short length of soil pipe clipped to the ply inside of the van, does the job.

I used to scrap them but with the cost of copper now everything longer than an inch gets saved and used.

Ive raised my floor with three lengths of 4x2 inch creating two sections i have all full lengths one side and cuts on the other
works great for me not lost any space at all
now ive got very easy access!!

This sounds complicated but it's very easy to do. I got fed up with having no where to put cuttings after pulling a 3m length from the pipe rack. I'd put them back in the rack and they'd soon work their way out of reach. So I needed a solution that would allow me to access ANY length of pipe all in the same pipe rack. Simples....
I cut a 3m length of 110mm soil pipe exactly in half along it's length with a grinder and filed down the edges with a sander. This made two equal halfs and I attached 3 hinges along its length on one side. Now instead of unscrewing an end cap to access the pipe, the pipe rack opens like a lid all along it's length and I can store any size I want in it and access it any time.

Orders and cheques for the coffin lid pipe rack to System3! LOL

i put them on the floor in the back of the van and use them first on next job. If its there for more that 2 weeks it get scrapped normally.

I keep anything less than 2 foot in my plastic tote, with the torch, flux, paste etc. Rest on floor of van behind tool boxes to stop rolling round

tht seems short, whatis minimum length that enery one keeps?
i would say bout a ft
otherwise carrin lots of short bits about ?

It was a bit tongue in cheek but small bits get chucked in the tool box and used up as I need them. I'll sometimes cut up small bits to use as spacers.

cool, am liking all the replies. I keep most of my off cuts in a box in the back of the van, but when i take them into a job with me and i need a certain length, i end up digging around for about 10 metres to look for that size. I never find it!!!!! Every time i do it i say i will never do it again, but, with the price of copper, i cant help it.

NIGHTMARE!!!!!!

Thanks for all the ideas guys. Keep them coming

I throw mine down the side of the van by the wheel arches. Then forget about them, and drive 15 miles out to the merchants for two foot of 15mm tube......well just being honest.

We are all the same , good thing is we are all honest about it 🙂

This is why I love this forum 🙂

Anything that can go in the toolbox goes in there. Its good practice to try and use short lengths first wherever possible rather than cutting a new length. That way you have less offcuts.

If I could force myself to measure properly rather than hold a pipe up to the area and use my thumb as a rough guide I'd probably save about £150 a year in pipe and - actually - time too.
