I'm self employed and work alone most of the time. I've been thinking about taking on an apprentice, I have found a lad that works well and is switched on.

Understandably i'm a little nervous about taking someone on. Has anyone taken on an apprentice recently and can offer any advice on cost and required paperwork etc?

He's over the age where the course is fully funded and I know i'll likely have to put up half the course cost, unless I can get a grant from the college. I'd probably be looking at some form of training bond written into the contract to make sure I get a decent return on my investment or if he wants to just get qualified and leave then he'll have to repay some of the training cost which will taper with time served.
