Technical certificate 6129

Hi. So i gained a technical certificate 6129 at collage 12 years ago. Gave up on the whole idea because i couldn't find a plumber to take me on to do the full nvq. Now my question is does this qualification still count towards an nvq. I now have a plumber friend so could get assesed with him. Or would i have to start from the beginning again and do all the collage stuff a second time?

My advice isn’t speak to a college or city and guilds, they will be the experts on what will count.

The 6129 qualification is awarded by C&G. the knowlegde you gained during training will be valuable and creditable for any awarding body. There are many routes you could take as there are other awarding bodies which will certify to the same criteria.

So forgive me for probs being a bit stupid. My city n guilds 6129 certificate was worth doing and if i wanted to re pursue the nvq i could get signed off at work so long as i was working with a qualified plumber?

I'm in similar position to yourself and have been looking into this. I did a 6129 at college 9 years ago, couldn't find an employer to do the NVQ. I'm now trying to resurrect this career change and have spoken to City & Guilds, EAL, Skills funding agency and various learning providers.

None of them were very helpful but what i have discovered is that the 6129 is still valid and some of the modules covered can, to a degree, be transferred over to the current NVQ, the 6189. However this is dependent on the learning provider.

If you were to do the new course through a college, they would need to discuss what type of work the plumbing company you work for covers to ensure that all areas of assessment can be achieved. So for example a bathroom fitting company may not be suitable due to the a lack of central heating/gas work. The NVQ also appears to be 2 years per level so 4 years total to complete levels 2 & 3. I think the old NVQ was a year each.

EASmechanical appear to offer this upgrade from 6129 to 6189 at a cost of £1500, but i have no idea how long it takes etc.

Hope this is of some use to you and i welcome anybody else's input or feedback on what i have said.

My advice would be to speak to JTL Training, the C&G 6129 can still, I believe, be APL'ed (Attained Prior Learning) over against the 6189 NVQ Level 2, so no college side, you will just need to obtain the on site evidence & be observed a couple of times, it can be complete quickly if you have access to the right types of work, are up to the required skill level & prepared to put the written work in to complete the portfolio.

But you might want to do this quickly as the Plumbing Qualifications are changing real soon ( I thing the deadline is June for JTL) Training centres may not be able to offer this as they move over to the new Plumbing standard 9189, no level 2 only level 3 over 3.5 to 4 years, with gas or other fuels or renewables in the last 8-12 months & end point trade assessments when you finish, to name just a few of the changes.

P.S. The portfolio is actually easier to complete if you do new bathrooms so long as they are not just straight swops with little pipework you don't need heating work but it can be used so long as you are installing new rads & pipework or the like. You certainly don't need gas work for Level 2 or 3.

It won't count towards the 9189 as only evidence of quals achieved in the last five years can lead to exemption
6189 is still available
The end point assessment is only if you are doing the 9189 as part of an apprenticeship
The 9189 is only available for apprentices so I'd advise the 6189
