Hi - a heating engineer told me that they have to legally fit TRVs if they do a boiler job- this true - wheres the legislation to prove this?

Thanks
JK

part l building regs require compliance
shouldnt be doing boiler installs without part l as you need the facts to be compliant
trvs are just one part of this

The police wont come knocking on your door if you dont, but it needs to be done, The old rad valves are one of the weakest links when you convert the boiler to a combi (assuming your doing this btw) the old packing glands can start to weep, I change all rad valves as a matter of fact, unless they look relativley modern.
They can save money on your fuel bills and increase your comfort too. For the little extra outlay while the system is drained its a no brainer to have them fitted.

part l building regs/also boiler mafacturers instructions/also benchmark, same for room stat

Guys, Thanks for reply but still not clear. Is it MANDATORY or RECOMMENDED to install a TRV when someone installs a new boiler? Thanks

Mandatory, building regs are legal docments. Trv on all rads apart from room containing room stat.

In any case, it wouldn't make sense not to. I assume the customer wants an efficient system?

Thermostatic rad valves aren't exactly expensive, starting from £9 a set. If the customer says they can't afford the difference you are likely to have problems getting paid for the whole job and I wouldn't do it at all.

I would walk away if someone was disputing paying for TRVs especially after the grief I have had from a BCO before about them.

if your installing and signing off a system as correct iaw building regs, its you that will be hauled up by any of the next owners of the property if they find problems, after all when youre paying your £2.30 to gas safe, you are "signing" a legal document in your name, and its valid until someone else goes in and changes a boiler etc.

when did the regulations on fitting thermostatic radiator valves come in
i had new boiler fitted by warm front two years ago and they did not fit them

Also a powerflush and various other things required to meet building regs.(Part L)
Also to comply with manufacturers warranty and benchmark.

a powerflush isnt a requirement, the system must be cleansed ,can be done with chemical ie sentinol x400
